The Art of the Notebook

I spend a lot of time on the computer, and recently I’ve been getting pretty sick of it. It’s amazing to think about all the things that I use my computer and the internet for. Email, banking, calendar, news, sports, etc. I use the computer so much that it has almost completely replaced the old fashioned pen and paper. Writing on paper is truly becoming a lost art. Well I intend to take it back, and you can too.

Step 1 - Get a notebook
There are a wide variety of notebooks available. It all depends on how much you want to spend and how long you want it to last. I prefer the Moleskine notebooks because they come in all kinds of different flavors, they are built to last, and they look nice. I especially like the Moleskine Small Squared Notebook, mainly because of it’s size. It’s small enough to fit in your pocket, which is something that comes in handy because you never know when you will get inspired to write something in it.

Step 2 - What to do with a notebook
What are you going to do with your notebook? Are you going to write in it, sketch in it, keep a journal, or keep track of things you need to do? If you are anything like me, you will be doing all of these things. To me a notebook is just what the name implies, a book to keep notes in. These notes may consist of anything. If your notebook only contains writings about what you did today then it is a journal. If it consists of dates and to-do’s then it is a calendar. A notebook is different it can contain everything.

Step 3 - Get Inspired
So you have a notebook, you understand what to do with it, but now you can’t think of anything to write in it. There are a few websites I keep an eye on to keep me motivated to write in my notebook. Notebookism is one of the best. There you can find reviews on different types of notebooks, sketches, and various things that other people do with their notebooks. They also have an excellent Flickr pool. I recommend occasionally searching Google for notebook, sketches, journal etc.

Nice sentiments, I\’m a big Moleskine fan too. ;-)

I have resigned myself to the will of the Moleskine, after struggling for years against it. It is the most pleasant notebook to own and write in, and I am a shameless impulse buyer. I’ve customized my Moleskine for my own uses. The pics will be up on the blog soon.
