The 10 Most Useful Websites

I know there are probably thousands of lists on the Internet that list the most useful sites available, but I don’t really care. This is my list of sites that are useful to me. The list is ordered from least useful to most useful. Let’s begin. Drum roll please…

10. Online Banking
Online banking has to be one of the best technological leaps in the past 30 years. No longer do you have to stand in line at the bank, mail out bills, or wonder how much money you have in the bank. All of this can be taken care of via your banks website, that is of course if your bank has online banking which most do.

9. Instructables
Get out and make something! If you are bored and need a hobby, this is the place to go. There are instructions for making damn near anything on this site. From the truly strange to the very useful, it can all be found here.

8. StumbleUpon
In my opinion StumbleUpon is one of the premier social networking sites available. It takes a little while to understand how it works and how to work it, but once you get that figured out you are hooked. Basically, you install the SU tool bar, create an account, choose some interests, and you are ready to begin stumbling. Click the Stumble button on the tool bar and you will be taken to a site based on your interests. If you like the site click the thumbs up button, if you don’t click the thumbs down button. Over time SU will learn what you like and dislike and makes better recommendations.

7. A Forum
Become a member of a forum. It’s a great way to interact with people, get to know new people, and share your interests. Forums are usually based on a particular topic, but most have a general lobby where you can discuss pretty much anything.

6. IMDB (Internet Movie Database)
Who was that guy in the movie Vanilla Sky? What year did Hackers come out? What new movies are coming out? All of these questions can be answered by IMDB, your source for all information about movies and TV shows.

5. Merriam-Webster Online
What does extirpate mean? Fortunatley, Merriam-Webster can help. It’s an online dictionary that offers more than just definitions of words. They have a word of the day, word games, a tool bar, and much more.

4. Amazon
Amazon isn’t just about books anymore. You can buy almost anything from Amazon these days, and from my experience Amazon is normally the cheapest around. Not to mention the fact that their customer service, website, order tracking, and suggestion system are top notch.

3. Digg
Digg is all about news. But the catch is, the users decide what news is news. Users submit stories/articles to digg. Then if other users like the story or article they “digg” it. If an story or article gets enough diggs it makes it to the front page with other top stories. It is a fascinating system, and it’s amazing how fast hot topics can be put in front of your face. To me, watching the digg front page is like watching a snapshot of the tech world.

2. Wikipedia
Need to know anything? Wikipedia is your source. It’s basically a user generated, user maintained, encyclopedia. There is so much information available in so many different languages that it boggles my mind to even think about it. I have spent literally hours clicking the “random article” link and just reading through it.

1. Google
Who doesn’t use Google these days? More than likely Google would have been number one on my list if it were just a search engine, but that’s not even half of what it is. It offer so many more things such as email, Google Earth, different search statistics, book searching, blog searching, photo organization, videos, and much more.

Hell, I wouldn\’t be reading this without Stumble Upon. That gets my vote every time.

I would agree on the Stumble Upon because that’s how I got here too! I also must check one thing or another on IMDB at least twice a day/

Same here, haha. Good ol SU!
But were is the Del.icio.us love? I don’t know what I would do with out being able to access my links from any computer.

Another super useful site if you haven’t found it already yourself if Jott.com. It is awesome.
(you can blog from your cellphone!)

Although Stumble Upon helped me find this site, there is no doubt that Google may be the most useful website ever created.
