Guitar Hero II is stealing my soul.

So me and a friend of mine were pretty excited about Guitar Hero II. I was into it mainly to check out the game. I had played it a few times in Best Buy, and seemed like it could be fun. My friend however, was in it only for the purpose of decorating the guitar that comes with the game. He talked constantly about decorating it with pictures of naked ladies, flames, and feathers.

The game is released. We starting looking around. Everywhere we look, it’s sold out. I end up calling every surrounding Wal-Mart, which is about 5, and none of them have it. I call Best Buy and they are out. Target, K-Mart, and Fry’s are all sold out. That weekend we didn’t end up getting it. The next weekend rolls around and we form a new plan. We call around again. Still, nobody has it. By this time we have gathered more troops in this war effort. One of our other friends ends up getting on eBay and finds one that is about 4 hours away. He emails the guy and asks if he will sell it that day, and leaves him my phone number. I end up getting the bright idea that I should rent the game. I call Blockbuster, and they have two. I make it to Blockbuster in record time and rent the game. It comes to me still wrapped in plastic. It’s virgin fret still clean and shiny.

We spent the next couple of hours learning how to play the game.

A week later, I now officially own a copy of the game. And I must warn you, Guitar Hero II is a sick drug. After a while you begin to develop the following symptoms of a dependency to GH2:

  • Play the game for a while and then look at some fixed object such as a lamp, speaker, or just the carpet. You will begin to notice that it appears to be growing. This is Guitar Hero Syndrom (GHS), there is no cure.
  • You will begin to hear the songs from the game everywhere you go. In your car, at work, on the radio, in the grocery store, and you may even begin to think you are hearing them but there is no source of music around
  • When you hear other music you will begin to think of how you would play it in Guitar Hero. In advanced stages you will actually raise your hands and mimic pressing the buttons.
  • Large amounts of time will literally fly by. 7:00 PM can become 2:00 AM in a matter of moments.

It’s a great game if you are a fan of the guitar, like a game where you play a guitar instead of bashing buttons on a controller, or you are an 8 year old kid with incredible skills. But head this warning, it’s dangerous….
