If you haven’t heard of the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon then you probably will in the near future. The idea behind this phenomenon is that if you hear some strange fact, odd word, or unusual person/place/thing, then you are probably going to hear it again in the future. Basically once something comes up, it is likely to come up again.
Take for example, wind chimes.
8:30 PM Last Night
I’ve got my iTunes play list on random. A song called “wind chimes are gay” by Anal Cunt comes on. It’s a 30 second song that consists of music being played really fast while a gay screams “wind chimes are gay” over and over. I gave it the “huh huh huh” laugh and moved on.
4:50 AM Today
I’m walking to work. What do I hear? Wind chimes on some one’s porch. I walk the same way everyday and I have never noticed them before. Maybe they just put them up? I don’t know.
6:30 AM
I was getting a little bored at work and decided to send everyone in my phonebook a text message. I couldn’t think of anything really clever, and I had that song in my head so I just sent: “wind chimes are gay”
9:30 AM
A girl that works next time walks over to me and says “What do you think about wind chimes” For a minute I thought that maybe somebody at work that got one of my text messages told her to ask me that, but no. It was completely unrelated. She goes on to tell me how annoying they are and how they serve no purpose.
So in the span of about 12 hours I had an unrelated encounter with wind chimes four times. Who ever thinks about wind chimes? Not me.
I also thought it was strange that since I was first introduced to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon a few weeks ago I have noticed a lot more situations that fit the characteristics of it. It’s like knowing what it is makes you susceptible to it.
