October 8-14 is fire prevention week. I know this because they have been posting all kinds of “prevent fires” things at work. They have also been handing out little fire prevention things from NFPA. On the back of one of these I noticed a little section about the Great Chicago Fire that happened on October 8th and 9th, 1871 and is the reason for National Fire Prevention week.
Here are some facts about the Great Chicago Fire that were in the pamplet I was reading:
- 250 People killed
- 100,000 were left homeles
- 17,000 building destroyed
I guess I had heard of the fire but did not realize how destructive it really was. 17,000 buildings is a lot. It’s probably twice as many buildings as their are in the city that I live in.

Also, speaking of Chicago and fire, The Chicago Bears are hot right now. They will be in the Superbowl. I can’t say they will win, but they will be there.
