On June 4th, 2005 I officially joined the married club. Overall I have to say that it doesn’t really feel that much different. Although I do feel a sense of greater responsibility. I guess that life for me has been just about me for so long, and now it’s about more than me. It’s about me and my wife and family now. It’s a very strange feeling at the moment, but like anything I’m sure I’ll adjust over time.
The wedding was great, well besides the scorching heat. There is nothing quite like standing in the blazing sun in a double black tux sweating bullets right before your wedding. I can’t say that I was really nervous, although looking back I think I was. I just wasn’t sure what to expect as far as what was going to happen when I was standing in front of all those people. When I first walked in I looked at my dad and he was sobbing like a 5 year old who had just lost his puppy. I decided not to look at him anymore, or I would have joined him. The only other time I thought I was going to lose it was when my wife-to-be came down the aisle. Once she got me and we were looking at each other and no one else everything was ok. At that point it was all about us. It was a surreal experience. On a humorous note there was a point where we each had to take a candle and light another candle with it. Well when my wife picked up her candle she dripped hot wax on her hand. I heard her go “ahhhh”. I had to fight off the laughter for that one.On to the reception. The reception for me went so quick. Being at someone else’s wedding and being at your own are tow different things. It just went so fast for me. It was do this, do that, do this, speech, do this, dance, over. There was little time to actually enjoy the reception. Here are some highlights. My father-in-law’s speech was priceless. He told a story about a time when we were golfing and my wife had found a cat. I knew I was taking the cat home and I told him that. After this story he told me to “get used to it”. A good laugh was had by all on that one. Then my best man (my brother) gave his speech which began with everyone returning the key to my house back to me. About 10 girls stand up and give me a key. It was classic. He then talked about what a good couple we were and how good of a cook Kyla was. Except for a little trouble we had with the limo everything went really well.
The honeymoon! This is the part that almost seemed like a bonus. So much attention had been focused on the wedding that I kind of forgot that aftwerwards I got to take a week’s vacation in Cancun Mexico. We had planned to take a serious vacation, and by serious vacation I mean laying around doing nothing. And that is exactly what we did. Most of our time was spent by the pool, except for the day after I got really burnt. Our hotel was just awesome. The balcony off of our room faced the ocean. There is nothing quite like sleeping to the sound of waves outside your room. I spent a lot of my time drinking. I probably averaged somewhere around 15-20 mixed drinks a day. It’s funny how much you can drink when they are free and there is always a bar within 30 feet of you. The thing is that I never really got wasted. I think a combination of the heat and the fact that the drinks were weak saved me. Speaking of heat, boy was it hot. I don’t think I have ever felt heat quite like that. When it’s 95, with 100 percent humidity it’s hot. There are no two ways about it. In fact on the day I got burnt, I bet I was only in the sun about an hour and a half and I was a deep red from front to back.
Back home again. Mexico is a nice place to visit, but I woudn’t want to stay there. By the end of our trip we were ready to get back home. I wish the trip back was as smooth as the trip down. We had to wake up at 3 in the morning to check out and catch our ride to the airport. This was rough. Then when we got on the plane the wife was having what she calls “stomach problems” Needless to say, she was clutching the barf bag the entire way on the plane. I had to kind of zone her out which I felt bad for, but thinking about her being sick was starting to make me sick. Once we were “back home again in Indiana” my mother-in-law and sister-in-law picked us up and had a bunch of pictures from the wedding to show us. They turned out really well. We went straight from the airport back to her parents house to open all of our wedding presents. I have to say that we made out like bandits. We got so much stuff for our house that we shouldn’t need anything ever again. After all of that we finally made it back to our house were we discovered that for our final wedding present our house watchers (Derrick and my sister-in-law) had completely cleaned our house, mowed the grass, planted flowers, and just generally made our house look really nice.
If you have any pictures of from the wedding, I am starting a collection of wedding pictures at the link below, send them to me and I will add them.
